Bandhas: Gateways to the Yoga Body | Online Immersion

August 10 - August 31

This intensive explores the potent, alchemical effects that the bandhas have on the yoga body. We aim to demystify the bandhas, identifying them neither as mechanical locks nor esoteric techniques. Rather we will see how the bandhas flow as a natural extension of  breathing and spinal motion. We will have time to explore each bandha, so that each week will include practices, meditations, journaling and pranayama to integrate the bandha into daily life. In the biogeometry of the human body the bandhas are like internal gates or portals that direct the flow of vital energy. Through guided meditation, somatic awareness, yoga postures and practices of yogic “soaking” (samadhi), this is a transformational month of practice and study.

Cost: $130 + tax

When: Daily Live Zoom Meetings Each Wednesday: August 10, 17, 24, and 31 | 9:30 – 11:30am Mountain Time

Week 1 – Getting to the Root | Mula Bandha: Gateway to the Pelvis
This class details how the pelvic floor is a doorway to the spine. Utilizing the classic square shape, the entire biogeometry of the body is supported by this first bandha. We will see how motion within the mula is integral to the health of the pelvic viscera—the uterus, bladder, colon and prostate.

Week 2 – The Flying Bandha | Uddiyana Bandha: Gateway to the Diaphragm
Uddiyana bandha is critical for lengthening and stabilizing the lumbar spine while activating the third chakra in the solar plexus. This is the gateway to the body’s personal power and fear and is inseparable from respiration. This bandha governs the kidney/adrenal complex.

Week 3 – The Throat Bandha | Jalandhara Bandha: Gateway to the Skull
In the biogeometry of the body’s internal diaphragms, the structures within the throat govern the overall metabolic drive of the individual. Like holding a butterfly in your hand, this bandha requires exquisites care and and the most delicate touch. We study how the throat bandha connects to the thyroid, vocal cords and heart rate via the carotid sheath.

Week 4 – The Palatine Bandha | Gateway to the Brain and Brain Stem
If the architecture of the body is like a cathedral, then the palate is the uppermost cupula that opens to the sky. Work with the palate requires release of the jaw, tongue and inner ear. Opening the palate relaxes the brain tissue and provides an experience of lightness and spaciousness within.
